How to take care of a mechanical wristwatch

watches

Often, in order to prolong the life of a cashmere coat or silk top, it is enough to store and wash your favorite thing properly.

DO NOT LOSE AND READ THE INSTRUCTIONS for watches, especially if we are talking about watches with complicated functions. This is really useful information.

Even if your watch runs well, it should be serviced or repaired every three years. This prevents normal wear and tear on the parts and the lubricants from degrading.

THE WATCH SHOULD NOT BE OVERHEATED OR OVERCOOLED. For example, leave it in the sun. This will cause the lubricant to dry out prematurely. You should also avoid wearing your watch in a sauna. Sudden changes in temperature and excessive moisture and dryness may affect its water-resistance.

One of the MAIN Mistakes with a watch labeled as water resistant is to bathe in it. A watch that is less than 100 meters water resistant should not be used for swimming. At best, you can get caught in the rain or wash your hands in it. In any case, after a watch has been in water, it should be carefully wiped with a soft cloth or chamois leather. If your watch has been in sea water, rinse it under running water or with a damp cloth and then dry it thoroughly. Never dry your watch on a radiator or with a hair dryer. If condensation forms under the glass, you should call a service as soon as possible.

YOU CAN AND SHOULD CLEAN YOUR WATCH YOURSELF. This will prevent dirt and perspiration from getting into the case, band and clasp of your watch. You can use a soft or suede cloth for this and a toothpick for hard-to-reach corners. Wood will not harm metal.

IT IS BEST TO CHANGE YOUR WATCH ONCE PER DAY, around the same time. Then you are sure of your watch’s power-reserve (if you do not have it). If your watch is self-winding, it is usually not necessary to wind it when you wear it all the time. When setting the time, if the watch has a calendar function, it is not possible to set the date between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. This time interval is reserved for a certain period. This time interval is reserved for automatic calendar adjustment in all watches and external influences may damage the movement.

DO NOT USE winders, i.e. automatic winding boxes, to store mechanical watches. Such a device will do nothing but cause premature wear. The only exception is watches with perpetual calendars and other time-dependent complications. If you do not wear the watch, it is best to wind it up fully once a month.

DO NOT subject the watch to shocks or impacts to avoid malfunctions. Chopping firewood and playing sports is best done with an electronic watch specifically designed for outdoor activities.

BE CAREFUL WHERE YOU PUT THE WATCH. Many household appliances emit strong enough electromagnetic radiation to magnetize the watch. As a result, the accuracy of the watch may be affected, up to and including the watch stopping altogether.

If the watch does break down, do not take it to the nearest repair shop. You should find a service that specializes in the class of watch your brand is in. The higher it is, the more professional equipment is required for repair. And the more knowledge and experience the technician should have.
