How often should the clock be wound, adjusted and tuned?

watches

We often encounter situations in which a watch movement fails because it is not wound regularly. This leads to the need for qualified and sometimes costly watch repair. We see three typical cases:

Watch is simply winded irregularly, by the principle “when God wills it” – if you need the watch: wind it, if you don’t need it: leave it lying on the shelf, on the table and stop it.
wind it every 10, 20, 30… wind the watch every 10, 20, 30… minutes, but regularly and, as they say, 100 times a day
do not wind your watch for months at all, bringing it up once or twice a year.
The first case is the least dangerous, the next two will almost certainly lead to the failure of the mechanism. Why?

The watch spring is an element, though small, but very powerful. It should not be constantly in tension, in full “readiness”, otherwise it can damage other elements. By winding the watch every 10 minutes, we constantly keep the spring at maximum tension. As a rule, this does not lead to an immediate breakdown – it simply increases the rate of wear of the elements of the watch movement, reduces their operating time and can lead to premature failure.
If you do the opposite – leave the watch without winding for months or even a year or more – the lubricant will thicken. It is unlikely to cause damage, but it is even less likely to be able to tell the exact time.
Only regular winding – exactly as instructed – guarantees the reliability and durability of your watch, its precision and the accuracy of the time. Self-winding watches do not normally require any adjustment at all.

When should a watch not be adjusted?
Adjustment, resetting clocks must also be carried out at certain times. Here we are talking about those devices which, in addition to showing the time, also display the day of the week and the date. As a rule, the latter is switched every 24 hours between 21:00 and 3:00 (you can clarify in the manual).

If at this point in time you take the trouble to adjust the accuracy, there is a risk of damaging the day and date switching mechanism. In some devices, such damage will lead to many other problems, including the breakage of individual elements, which simple adjustment and adjustment can no longer fix.

Observing these simple rules, you will definitely be able to avoid 9 out of 10 reasons of breakages, imprecise running (lagging or rushing). If you have unknowingly made one of these mistakes, do not worry – we can help you: we will repair your watch and fine-tune it.
